Fortress Mariupol. Intro

Fortress Mariupol is a film series made up of recordings of video calls with fighters who defended the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol against Russian attackers in the spring of 2022. Since the beginning of the siege, director Yuliia Hontaruk stayed in contact with them. In the film, she uses her own recordings as well as footage she had already filmed in Mariupol in 2015. In the various episodes of the cycle, the protagonists share their thoughts and views with the director, talking about life and their hopes. The series begins with a poem by Nava, recorded in the bunker of "Azovstal

Yuliia Hontaruk

Yuliia Hontaruk was born in 1987. She studied film directing at the State University of Theater, Cinema and Television. Since 2013, she has been a member of the National Union of Cinematographers in Ukraine. With the start of the Euromaidan protests, Yuliia became one of the founders of the creative association Babylon'13. She directed more than 35 documentaries for Babylon'13. Yuliia's films have been screened at IDFA, Ji.hlava IDFF, and Trieste IDFF.
